Big Five Game Drives in Thornybush
Discover the thrill of following a pride of lions or sitting amidst a herd of elephants as they peacefully feed and play just metres away.
Game drives are included in every stay at Shimungwe Lodge - twice a day. We depart at dawn and again in the late afternoon, when wildlife is often most active, to explore Thornybush Game Reserve with an experienced guide and tracker team.
The reserve forms part of the unfenced Greater Kruger ecosystem and is home to the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo—as well as giraffe, zebra, hyena, African wild dog and many other species. Every drive is different, and wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, but they're always interesting.
As a private reserve, Thornybush permits responsible off-road tracking under appropriate conditions. This allows the guiding team to follow wildlife more closely while respecting the animals and reserve rules.
Shimungwe accommodates only eight guests. Although the safari vehicle has ten guest seats, no more than eight lodge guests travel in it—and often fewer—creating a more comfortable and personal game-viewing experience.
