Shimungwe Lodge is located within Thornybush Game Reserve, officially known as Thornybush Nature Reserve, which forms part of South Africa’s Greater Kruger ecosystem. This private Big Five reserve combines exceptional wildlife viewing with convenient access from Hoedspruit.
Getting to Shimungwe Lodge
Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport is approximately 45 minutes from the lodge, with scheduled flights connecting Hoedspruit to Johannesburg and Cape Town.
Airport transfers are not included in the accommodation rate and are normally arranged by the guest or travel agent. Guests may choose to drive, with detailed directions (via Acornhoek) available.
Shimungwe is approximately six hours by road from Johannesburg. Please download and follow our driving instructions, as standard navigation applications may not always identify the correct reserve entrance.

Thornybush Game Reserve protects over 14,000 hectares of African wilderness and shares an unfenced boundary open to the Greater Kruger National Park. Wildlife moves freely through this open ecosystem, creating excellent opportunities to encounter the Big Five and many other species.
