Three Worth Watching For
The southern ground hornbill is hard to miss once you know what you're looking for: a large, slow-striding bird of the open savanna, its scarlet facial skin vivid against jet-black feathers. Its call carries further than almost anything else in the bush, a deep, booming sound guests often hear before they see the bird itself. It's increasingly rare across the region, which makes a good sighting feel less like luck and more like a small privilege.
Overhead, the white-headed vulture is one of the more quietly remarkable sightings Thornybush offers: a critically endangered raptor that rides the reserve's warm air currents with an effortless, watchful authority. Guides know the difference between an ordinary vulture sighting and a white-headed one, and it shows in how they point it out.
Down in the riverine bush, patience is rewarded with smaller finds like the olive woodpecker, an unusual forest specialist that few visitors think to look for and even fewer expect to find.
