Birdwatching in Thornybush Game Reserve
With more than 300 bird species recorded in the area, Thornybush Game Reserve offers rewarding birdwatching throughout the year. Shimungwe takes its name from the local Shangaan word for the bateleur, one of the reserve’s most distinctive eagles.

An Extra Layer to Every Drive
Our guiding team has excellent knowledge of the local birdlife and will point out significant sightings as they happen: a raptor riding a thermal overhead, a flash of colour low in the bush, without slowing the pace of the drive unless a guest wants to stop and look properly.
When a guide is available, guests may request an informal bird walk within the lodge grounds at no additional cost. Guided walks beyond the lodge grounds must be booked as a formal nature walk, which is subject to qualified-ranger availability and an additional fee.
Three Worth Watching For
The southern ground hornbill is hard to miss once you know what you're looking for: a large, slow-striding bird of the open savanna, its scarlet facial skin vivid against jet-black feathers. Its call carries further than almost anything else in the bush, a deep, booming sound guests often hear before they see the bird itself. It's increasingly rare across the region, which makes a good sighting feel less like luck and more like a small privilege.
Overhead, the white-headed vulture is one of the more quietly remarkable sightings Thornybush offers: a critically endangered raptor that rides the reserve's warm air currents with an effortless, watchful authority. Guides know the difference between an ordinary vulture sighting and a white-headed one, and it shows in how they point it out.
Down in the riverine bush, patience is rewarded with smaller finds like the olive woodpecker, an unusual forest specialist that few visitors think to look for and even fewer expect to find. It's the kind of sighting that rewards guests who've asked their guide to slow down, rather than those working through a checklist.
