Exclusive 4-Suite Safari Lodge in Greater Kruger
Once a private residence reserved only for invited guests, Shimungwe remains one of the hidden gems in the Thornybush Game Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger National Park, in the heart of South Africa's premier Big Five safari destinations. The stunning location, offering elevated views over the dry Timbavati riverbed, was hand-picked by the owners for its blissful, secluded nature and captivating array of wildlife ambling through the leafy marula and knobthorn trees of the surrounding savanna.
Originally opened in 2003 for private use by the family and invited guests, Shimungwe occupies a secluded position overlooking the seasonal Timbavati riverbed in Thornybush Game Reserve, part of South Africa’s Greater Kruger ecosystem.
After two decades as a private bush retreat, Shimungwe welcomed its first commercial guests in August 2023. The intimate four-suite lodge retains the warmth and relaxed character of its earlier years while offering an all-inclusive safari experience for a maximum of eight guests.
A Private Sanctuary in Thornybush Game Reserve
Wooden walkways connect the suites with the lounge, open-air bar, dining areas, swimming pool and traditional boma. Its small scale allows the team to offer personal hospitality and an unhurried safari experience shaped around each guest.
Lucan has guided at Shimungwe since the property first opened for private use in 2003. Daniel joined him later, and both have now worked at Shimungwe for more than 20 years. Their long experience together contributes to the lodge’s deep knowledge of the local landscape and wildlife.
The Story Behind Our Name
The name Shimungwe itself carries a story.
Shimungwe is the local Shangaan name for the bateleur, one of Africa’s most distinctive eagles. Its remarkably short tail and rocking, acrobatic flight inspired the French name bateleur, meaning tightrope walker.
The bird reflects Shimungwe’s connection to the surrounding wilderness and remains an important part of the lodge’s identity.
With 4 suites and a maximum capacity of eight guests, Shimungwe is also well suited to host private family celebrations, exclusive-use stays as well as small specialist groups seeking safari adventures in the Greater Kruger.

Lucan – Field Guide
Recognised for his talent in tracking and knowledge of the bush, Lucan has now been guiding at Shimungwe since 2003, making him one of the most knowledgeable Big Five safari guides in the Thornybush Game Reserve - he knows it better than anyone!
Daniel – Tracker
As Lucan's younger brother, Daniel shares his brother's love of the bush and his innate knack for tracking wildlife. Working together at Shimungwe for more than 20 years, the two make an incredible team!

Nataly & Gerhard - Lodge Management
Nataly, our Lodge Manager, leads the team, overseeing every aspect of the guest experience, ensuring the warm hospitality and personal attention for which Shimungwe is known. Gerhard is a qualified safari guide who also leads bush walks and is responsible for security, transport and maintenance of all the lodge facilities and gardens. Together they share a lifelong passion for the African bush.
